How safe was the car you drove in the 1990s?
Taking stock of the past 30 years of independent vehicle safety testing, ANCAP reflects on the vehicle models first rated when testing began in 1993.
Commonplace on Australia's roads at the time were the Ford Falcon, Mitsubishi Magna, Holden Commodore and Mazda 626 – just to name a few.
These, together with the Honda Accord, Subaru Liberty, Nissan Pintara, Toyota Camry and Volvo 940 all featured in the first round of safety ratings released in 1993, in an effort to inform consumers about the safety features, or lack of, that were fitted to their everyday drives.

ANCAP awards five-star safety rating to Mercedes-Benz EQS
ANCAP SAFETY, Australasia's independent voice on vehicle safety, has today released a five-star safety rating for the battery electric Mercedes-Benz EQS saloon (sedan). The EQS showed high levels of protection to vehicle occupants and good collision avoidance capability when tested against ANCAP's 2020-2022 assessment criteria.
Full points were awarded to the Mercedes-Benz EQS for adult occupant protection in both the side impact and oblique pole tests.  The driver and rear passenger in the full width frontal test also scored full points – making the EQS just the fourth vehicle to achieve this result under ANCAP's 2020-2022 test protocols. A high score in this test demonstrates a good combination of vehicle structure and restraint performance.
