Subaru Levorg Unveiled At Tokyo Motor Show

Subaru's prototype Levorg tourer has been unveiled at the Tokyo motor Show.

Levorg offers the choice of two engines - a 1.6-litre or 2.0-litre Horizontally-Opposed Direct Injection turbocharged Boxer, both offering high output and torque.

Levorg's stylish exterior combines with generous cabin space and the latest Subaru technology, including the next-generation EyeSight driver assist system.

The production Levorg is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in northern spring 2014, with pre-orders starting in January.

There are presently no plans for export versions of Levorg.

PACKAGING

Subaru believes high utility is expected of a touring wagon, as well as a comfortable passenger space for long drives, and Levorg is built to fulfill these requirements.

Styling is sleek, but cargo space is functional and roomy, designed with the expertise gained from years of developing wagons.

DESIGN

EXTERIOR

Levorg is a fusion of “stylish” and “functional” - it gives a strong impression of a sports car, while offering the smooth, sporty feel of a wagon.

While maintaining ample cargo space, the rear roof is low, providing a sleek silhouette. Its chic but active appearance conveys Levorg's performance potential.

The dynamic front design features the standard Subaru design motif of the classic hexagonal grille, while the hawk eye headlights emphasize Levorg's sporty aura.

Levorg is available in metallic blue grey steel or pearl crystal white, both never used in production before.

INTERIOR

Levorg's interior has a high quality feel and is equipped with advanced and useful functions.

Piano black finishes, metallic-toned accents and plated parts highlight the interior and create a rich space.

The gauges use a twin-lens horizontal layout featuring 3.5 inch full-color liquid crystal displays. The satin plated rings with ice blue lighting emphasize a sharp high-tech look.

Levorg's sportiness is portrayed in the D-shaped steering wheel that raises the expectation of a fun driving experience.

TECHNICAL

ENGINE

Two engine types are available in Levorg, each with unique qualities balanced between driving and environment.

1.6-LITRE HORIZONTALLY-OPPOSED DIRECT INJECTION TURBO “DIT” BOXER ENGINE

It offers both brisk driving and superb fuel efficiency of 17.4 km/litre (JC08 mode)\*1. This is achieved by combining a low displacement engine with DIT.

Fuel efficiency was enhanced by Subaru's use of DIT plus no idling.

Levorg runs for 1000km\*2 on a single tank of regular unleaded fuel.

2.0-LITRE HORIZONTALLY-OPPOSED DIRECT INJECTION TURBO “DIT” BOXER ENGINE

A high output of 221kW (300PS)\*1 and torque that reaches 400Nm (40.8kgfm)\*1 at 2000 rpm, makes for impressive performance suiting a high grade sports tourer. However, Levorg also achieves a superb environmental value of 13.2 km/litre (JC08 mode).

TRANSMISSION

To match the two engines options, Levorg features a Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission, with characteristic smoothness - but also a fun sporty mode with Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive).

LINEARTRONIC CVT COUPLED WITH 1.6-LITRE DIT ENGINE

The lightweight and compact Lineartronic CVT offers two modes of SI-Drive.

SPORT LINEARTRONIC COUPLED WITH 2.0-LITRE DIT ENGINE

The high output and high torque 2.0-litre DIT is matched with the new Sport Lineartronic CVT.

SI-Drive has “Sport#” (S#) mode, allowing eight-speed shifting.

CHASSIS AND BODY

In line with its sports tourer credentials, Levorg has enhanced rigidity in various parts of the chassis and body.

Together with the electric power steering and optimized suspension stiffness, it produces sporty steering with great responsiveness.

The small-diameter D-shaped steering has a thick grip for great maneuverability and response.

Body and suspension stiffness are considerably refined for driving comfort.

By producing a linear response on the road, Levorg makes even long drives pleasurable.

SAFETY

“All-around safety” summarizes Subaru's safety philosophy, the latest example being the EyeSight driver assist system, featured on Levorg.

ACTIVE SAFETY

Subaru has been refining and upgrading Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) for years. Combined with an advanced Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system, it offers exceptional hazard avoidance, plus the security of safe and enjoyable driving in any situation.

Levorg is fitted with the Emergency Stop Signal, which quickly flashes the hazard warning lights when the vehicle makes an abrupt deceleration from high speed. It warns the cars behind it of rapid approach and collision risk.

PASSIVE SAFETY

High tensile steel of 980 MPa and other grades is used in many areas of Levorg's structure. Although this contributes to weight reduction, it also achieves world class collision safety from all directions.

Levorg has seven airbags, including a driver's knee airbag.

To protect pedestrians, the bonnet and bulkhead are built to produce an impact-absorbing structure. Impact absorbents are also used in the sides of the engine compartment.

EYESIGHT

Levorg is equipped with the latest version of the EyeSight driver assist system. It has new stereo cameras with a wider angle, farther visibility and color recognition. It can also produce steering input, all of which adds up to greatly advanced safety performance.

New features such as the Active Lane Keep System, Pre-Collision Reverse Throttle Management and Brake Light Recognition join forces with improved functions such as the Pre-Collision Braking Control and Adaptive Cruise Control, to provide cutting-edge active safety technology.

MAIN FEATURES\*3

PRE-COLLISION BRAKING CONTROL

The relative speed at which automatic braking is possible to avoid collision between vehicle and object, or to reduce collision damage, has been increased to approximately 50 km/h.

An approximate 40 per cent increase in viewing angle and visibility distance makes it possible to detect pedestrians earlier, other vehicles cutting in, and cars ahead.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL - NOW WITH BRAKE LIGHT RECOGNITION\*4

The detection area of the stereo cameras has increased, allowing improved response to acceleration/deceleration of vehicles ahead, as well as better tracking of a vehicle in front when merging or rounding corners.

Because stereo cameras now have colour recognition, EyeSight can detect when brake lights are activated in the vehicle ahead and manage even faster deceleration when needed.

ACTIVE LANE KEEP SYSTEM (NEW)\*4

If EyeSight can recognize the lines on both sides of the lane when driving above approximately 65 km/h with Adaptive Cruise Control activated, it will assist steering so the vehicle stays in the middle of the lane.

This greatly reduces the burden on the driver and supports stable driving. The system determines whether the driver is operating the steering wheel or not. If not in operation, it will turn this feature off.

LANE DEPARTURE PREVENTION ASSIST

If the vehicle is about to stray from the lane when driving over approximately 65 km/h on highways, EyeSight will display and sound the lane departure warning signal and apply torque to the steering wheel to correct its path back to the centre of the lane, to suppress lane deviation.

PRE-COLLISION REVERSE THROTTLE MANAGEMENT (NEW)\*4

When the system detects acute acceleration while in reverse, it displays and sounds a warning signal and restricts engine output to stop the vehicle from backing up too abruptly.

HAZARD AVOIDANCE ASSIST (NEW) \*4

If the system determines that collision with another vehicle or object in front of the vehicle is highly likely, the integrated vehicle control technology of the VDC will assist the driver in steering the vehicle to avoid the collision.

\*3 The performance of these features may diminish due to road, weather and/or vehicle conditions.

\*4 The names of new functions are tentative.
