There are some great numberplates searching for the right cars to wear them in Shannons upcoming Autumn Timed Online Classic Auction from April 13-20.
Many of the most desirable are amongst the Victorian plates released by VicRoads.
A highlight is the rare double-digit '96', which would make a special gift to someone born, or on a vehicle built that year, as well as being an appreciating asset for collectors.
Individually, the numbers '9' and '6' also have a lucky meaning for many Asian people, making their combination in '96' very special. The number '9'' is considered lucky because in Chinese culture it means longevity or ever-lasting', while Chinese also regard '6' as a lucky number because it sounds similar to 'smooth', or 'well-off'.
The '96' plate has been in the same hands for decades and it is the first time that its owner has offered it for sale.
The last time a two-digit Victorian plate went to auction was the Victorian Heritage plate '26', which Shannons sold for $1.1 million just a year ago at its 2020 Autumn auction, making the expected selling range of $700,000-$760,000 for '96' very appealing.
Another plate expected to do well is the Victorian three-digit plate '992' – perfect for a current Porsche 911 owner at its expected selling range of $100,000-$150,000. Meanwhile, Sydney Porsche enthusiasts will be watching '917', with its important Le Mans-winning Porsche connection, that could bring a bit more:$150,000-$200,000.
Other Victorian three-digit plates like '449', '664' and '714' are also slated to sell for $100,000-$150,000.
Of the eight New South Wales plates on offer, other three-digit plates like '717' are expected to sell in the $140,000-$180,000 range.
Rare and pleasing numeric combinations are always desirable to collectors, such as the Victorian plates '22.888' ($20,000-$40,000) and '11.000' ($20,000-$40,000), while the Victorian 'birthday' plates '1997 and '2009' are each expected to sell for $40,000-$70,000.
For 'Beverley Hills 90210 TV show tragics, the Victorian plate '90.210 is a prime time opportunity at $20,000-$40,000.
Then there are the other 'lucky' plates, like Vic '884' ($100,000-$150,000) '1.688' and '8.890 (each $40,000-$70,000), or '22.888' and '88.321' (each $20,000-$40,000). The number '8' in Chinese is associated with wealth, success and status.
Or, bidders could just be after a great numerical sequence, like the NSW plates '71717' ($40,000-$60,000), or '16016' ($35,000-$50,000)
Six of the Victorian plates and two of the NSW plates are being offered with 'no reserve, with estimated selling prices ranging from the NSW plate '254387' ($20,000-$25,000) to the NSW '4191' ($70,000-$90,000).
