Team Triumph Australia won the Supersport Class in the Bel Ray 6
Hour at Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit yesterday. The team
finished the race in 8th place overall against some of the biggest
and most successful factory teams in Australia.
In an epic David & Goliath battle between the Team Suzuki GSXR
600 and Triumph Australia Daytona 675, it was the 'Dream Team' of
Christan Casella, John Chiodo & Jed Metcher that were
victorious on the day.
The Triumph Australia team had thought its chances of a win were
slim, when a fuel calculation error saw Casella run out of fuel at
the end of their very first stint. A hasty retrieval of the bike
and rider saw them re-join the race 10 laps down on the GSXR 600 of
Waters & Herfoss.
And that's the way it stayed for the majority of the day until a
mishap with the Team Suzuki bike enabled the Triumph team to pull
back the deficit and over take the Suzuki team in the dying minutes
of the race.
Casella & Metcher rode the majority of the race with John
Chiodo giving the 'young guns' a much needed break mid afternoon.
The tactic paid off, as heat was taking its toll on the boys, and
they were desperately trying to re-hydrate themselves at every
opportunity. Between the two, they were lapping at a consistent
1.39's, with a fastest lap of 1:37.535, and a total race time of
6:04:06.339, 16 laps down on overall race winners Wayne Maxwell
& Josh Brooks on the Demolition Polus Gas CBR 1000 Honda.
Casella & Metcher both commented on what tough day it was, and
how drained they were both Physical & mentally. "It's a real
game of tactics, with pit stops being crucial to the outcome, the
expression 'the race can be won or lost in the pits' couldn't be
truer".
