Not content with an already award-winning 12 months, the irresistible Triumph Daytona 675 triple has now received the ultimate accolade with victory in the prestigious International Bike of the Year (IBOTY) award.

The 2006 poll, voted on by 15 magazines around the globe, including Australian Motorcycle News (AMCN), saw the Daytona 675 cut a swathe, scoring 26 votes, well ahead of Yamaha's YZF-R6 (11) and the Kawasaki ZX-14 (9).

Six magazines - AMCN, Motorwereld (out of Belgium), Cycle Canada, KicXstart (Holland), Moto Motorcycle Magazine (Russia) and Cycle World (USA) -- awarded the Daytona 675 maximum votes (three) in IBOTY, while another four publications gave it two votes. In all, 10 of the periodicals gave the Daytona 675 at least one vote.

It is Triumph's first victory in IBOTY, which commenced way back in 1985.

Here's what Cycle Canada had to say about the Daytona 675: "It is...a jewel of a motorcycle, with performance that matches the top middleweight Supersport machines, a rich melodious growl from its inline triple-cylinder engine, and a slender, distinctive design that captures the essence of the term 'exotic', with without an exotic price."

Other magazines complimented the Daytona 675 on its speed, character, user-friendliness, looks, brakes, price, superb handling, and its victory in the Supersport class at the world's biggest sportsbike shootout, Masterbike.

"It's been an amazing couple of months for the 675," said the managing director of Triumph Australia, Steve Chiodo. "Locally, both Two Wheels and Australian Motorcycle News awarded the triple their highest individual bike award, and to now be recognised internationally is just a brilliant result.

"IBOTY holds a lot of cachet, so we are humbled that the Daytona 675 has prevailed in the face of such stern opposition."

The Daytona 675 was announced as the IBOTY winner in today's issue of AMCN, and the full deliberation will appear in the Christmas issue of the magazine, which goes on sale on December 13.

The Daytona 675 returns for the 2007 model year at an unchanged price -- $14,890 (plus ORC).
