Suzuki is set to shake up the middleweight ATV scene by
introducing two all-new models, a highly sophisticated automatic,
four wheel drive, and a manual two-wheel drive stablemate, both
capable of tackling the most rugged terrain.
Pet named Eiger, after the rugged Swiss mountain, both the
automatic LT-A400F and the manual (with automatic clutch) LT-F400
are fitted with Suzuki’s latest high technology engine, an
advanced single cylinder, overhead cam, aluminium-alloy powerplant
with four valves and 376cc of displacement.
Whether ridden in a hot dusty paddock or on a rocky trail, the
ATVs will perform reliably and at preferred temperature thanks to
Suzuki’s unique Advanced Cooling System (SACS), a more
efficient system than air cooling alone, and a lighter and simpler
option to water cooling.
On the LT-A400F model, torque from the engine is transferred to
the wheels smoothly and effortlessly through Suzuki’s
advanced CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) system, which
cleverly chooses the correct gear by matching optimum engine rpm
with ground speed.
Another impressive feature of the LT-A400F’s transmission
is its automatic braking system. The CVT produces engine braking
down hill, instead of freewheeling like the conventional automatic
transmissions used in some competing ATVs
Both the automatic and manual transmission make use of a
two-speed (high / low) sub-transmission which provides great
versatility in all conditions and because of a fully sealed design,
mud and water is repelled from the drive system.
“With the choice of a proven 5-speed transmission or
innovative fully automatic unit, the Eiger Quadrunners will offer
ATV users a package high on strength, functionality and value for
money,” Suzuki Australia’s General Manager for
Motorcycles, Perry Morison, says.
“We believe they will stack up very well against their
competitors.”
Changing from two-wheel drive to four wheel drive on the
LT-A400F Eiger is a simple procedure, the switch of a single lever
engaging drive to all four wheels.
Traction on the LT-A400F is further aided by a torque-sensing
limited-slip front differential.
The front differential transfers power to both front wheels
evenly and efficiently, helping to eliminate wheel spin in slippery
conditions. The torque-sensing front differential is also lighter,
more compact and durable and promotes easier steering than in
conventional units.
When the terrain gets rough, the Eigers’ class-leading
suspension travel smooths out the ride, both Suzuki ATVs boasts a
full 170mms of travel from both the independent double wishbone
front and swingarm rear suspension.
The robust Eigers are fitted with big 190mm dual front disc
brakes (the largest in their class) with hydraulic calipers, and
mud and water resistant single rear drums that incorporate the
parking brake.
Ground clearance on Suzuki’s two latest ATVs is an impressive
235mm, more than sufficient to deal with the roughest of terrains,
and with wide 12 x 8-inch front rims and 12 x 10-inch rear rims,
there a few obstacles these models can’t handle.
On board both models there is plenty of room for storing tools.
They have dual carrying racks, a rear-mounted sealed utility box
and for comfort, full-length floorboards. There is also the
additional benefit of an auxiliary electrical outlet that can be
used to power anything from a radio, mobile phone to spraying
equipment.
“An ATV is an important part of any farmer’s
machinery shed. With high demands on time and often narrow profit
margins, they need ATVs that are durable, practical and reliable,
both the Eiger models offer all this and much more,” Perry
Morison says.
Functionality aside, the Eigers are also aesthetically pleasing.
Their fuel tank covers and mud guards are integrated into the
durable plastic bodywork and fenders adding to their seamless
appearance.
The instrument cluster complete with speedometer, odometer and
tripmeter is handlebar-mounted and is easy to read. Up front, wide
mounted halogen headlights illuminate a broad area and at the rear
is a single taillight with brake light, the only ATV that offers
this as standard.
Suzuki’s LT-A400F and LT-F400 Eiger Quadrunners are
expected to be available in October.
