- Bold new sculpted design for the second-generation sports coupe
- Lightweight, powerful engines, impressive infotainment and connectivity features are hallmarks of the new A5
- Up to $26,000 in additional value across the brand new range
Hobart, 24 March, 2017 – The all-new second generation Audi A5 and S5 Coupe have touched down in Australia. Its predecessor was described by legendary Audi designer Walter de Silva, as the 'the most beautiful car I've ever designed' and this next generation A5 Coupe builds on the original's stunning silhouette and steps forward into a bold new direction.
Emboldened by dramatic lines and taut surfaces, the all-new Audi A5 Coupe has an athletic and sculpted appearance, while maintaining the classic sports coupe proportions.
The three-dimensional Singleframe grille is wider and flatter, giving the new A5 an aggressive and sporty stance at the front-end. The bonnet encompasses two sculpted channels that highlight a central 'power dome' over the powerplant that lies beneath.
A sharply drawn wave-like shoulder line begins at the front of the car and flows through the entire length of the side profile. The four wheel arches are emphasized equally, so as to underscore the legendary Audi quattro DNA. At the rear, sharp creases that form horizontal lines accentuate the impression of width, rounding off the A5's distinctive and sporty aesthetic.
"The all-new Audi A5 Coupe is even more stunning than its predecessor," said Andrew Doyle, Managing Director of Audi Australia.
"The original A5 set an impressive benchmark for beautifully resolved sports coupe design. To evolve its elegant simplicity into something more edgy was a formidable task for the Audi design team, but the end result is astonishingly good!
"It's no surprise that loyal A5 owners, and fans of the new design that are turning to Audi for the first time, have voted with their feet. Before this week's official launch, we already hold 500 orders for this spectacular vehicle," said Mr Doyle.
To complement its athletic stance, the new A5 Coupe is up to 40kg lighter than its predecessor, with a contribution of 15kg coming from the body itself. Despite this, the A5 Coupe has been awarded the maximum 5-star EuroNCAP and ANCAP safety rating. Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), along with other safety assistance features like side assist, parking system plus with rear view camera and rear cross traffic alert are equipped as standard across the A5 and S5 range.
The new A5 Coupe is offered with three drivetrain options. The entry-level 2.0 TFSI S tronic drives the front wheels only, with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission providing a real gain in sporty power delivery compared to its predecessor's multitronic CVT arrangement. With 140kW and 320Nm and the ability to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 7.3 seconds, the entry-level A5 Coupe offers significantly more performance than ever before. Fuel consumption is impressive, thanks to the engine's sophisticated dual injection, B-cycle combustion and advanced start-stop technology, at just 5.5 L/100km.
The other two models in the A5 line-up are both quattro models, with an all-wheel drive arrangement that employs the proven centre differential and a standard front-to-rear torque split of 40:60 respectively. Up to 70 percent of the engine's torque can be directed to the front and up to 85 percent to the rear during particularly dynamic driving conditions.
The 2.0 TFSI engine delivers a substantial 185kW/370Nm, and together with the advantage of quattro, can reach 100km/h from rest in only 5.8 seconds – well into the realm of more expensive sports cars. The 2.0 TDI quattro drivetrain offers 140kW of power, with a substantial 400Nm of torque available from just 1750rpm. Both engines are equipped with the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission as standard.
The S5 Coupe offers the next level of performance, weighing in 60 kg lighter than its predecessor. With a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine that is an all-new design from the ground up, the new engine produces 260kW (up 15kW), while peak torque of 500Nm (up 60Nm) is available from as low as 1370rpm. Such spontaneous response is aided by the twin-scroll turbocharger's location inside the 90-degree vee, which ensures the shortest possible travel paths for exhaust gases to pass through. The engine itself is 14kg lighter than its predecessor's supercharged powerplant.
Efficiency is also assured, at just 7.6 L/100km, also thanks to the same innovative B-cycle combustion method in the 2.0 TFSI engine.
Matched to a fast-shifting eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission and quattro, the all-new S5 Coupe can reach 100km/h in just 4.7sec, which is 0.2 sec faster than its predecessor. As an enhancement to the standard quattro driveline, it is also possible to option a sport differential on the rear axle that can apportion even more torque to the wheel with the most grip. This effectively 'points' the car towards the apex of a corner.
This quattro system is the perfect partner for the newly developed five-link front and rear suspensions that is standard on all A5 and S5 models, and is further complemented by the standard adaptive dampers that can be adjusted for a more comfortable ride, focused dynamics and everything in between via the Audi drive select system. The brake system on the S5 Coupe is suitably powerful, with 350mm ventilated front discs clamped by 6-piston calipers.
The all-new A5 Coupe comes equipped a very high level of equipment, with a significant increase in standard specification across the range. In the case of the S5 Coupe, the total improvement in customer value is over $26,000.
The entry-level A5 Coupe 2.0 TFSI boasts 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, Audi virtual cockpit, MMI Navigation plus (with 10GB media storage and 2x SDHC slots), Audi connect with Audi smartphone interface (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), DAB+ digital radio, convenience key and the 180w Audi sound system all as standard equipment, with additional standard features on the quattro models. High-value option packages are also available, to cater for customers with individual requirements.
The all-new Audi A5 and S5 Coupe range are on-sale now.
